4/10/25 - Started Star Wars Book
Hello, feasyheads!
Apologies for not posting yesterday. I had a lot of work, and besides, I didn't get much reading time.
I believe I owe you a review of the series Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness.
Overall, this was an amazing series and one that I would recommend to not only readers of the same level as I but slightly younger. The sci-fi is prevalent in the series, and yet the settlers are far from technologically advanced.
The series revolves around Todd Hewitt, the youngest in Prentisstown. At the start, he is a month away from turning thirteen and becoming a man. But Prentisstown is no ordinary town. The Noise germ, found on New World, makes men have Noise. It's sort of weird, but basically everyone can hear everyone's thoughts. Todd has also been told that the Noise germ killed all the women, and that the Spackle, the indigenous race, released it during their war against humans. The future looks bleak for Todd and humanity. It's just him and 146 other men, and they are struggling to get by.
One day, Todd discovers a horrible secret the town is hiding from him. When he runs away, he meats a girl. With absolutely no Noise.
The rest of the story is about Todd and Viola uncovering truth after truth and trying to bring peace to the land.
This is one of those reads that has you sucked in. It was a ride all the way, riddled with plot twists and turns.
Ness's writing style has a lot of sentences finishing with a dash (And we all fall down-) which is interesting as well as the spelling mistakes you'd expect from a boy who actually never learned to read.
The character development of Todd throughout the whole series is incredible. We can see that Todd has a lot of thoughts drilled into him about what it means to be a man and he slowly lets go of these.
As I've said before, especially in the third book, Mayor Prentiss fascinates me. His character development, for better or worse, makes him, in my opinion, one of the most well made antagonists I've read about.
After all, he has a very odd relationship with Todd. He wants Todd to be his son very desperately, but knows that what he does makes him a monster in Todd's eyes.
I did like that Ness depicted the Noise of animals realistically. Manchee, Todd's dog, is pretty stupid and has little to say. Stupider still are sheep, and all that they can say is "Sheep!"
In addition, the different fonts and the occasional large block of Noise made the books a cooler read, although it definitely didn't work as well online.
There's also a movie, but from what I saw, it doesn't look as good. It is pretty hard to depict Noise, after all. For my rating: 9 out of ten. This was an awesome series that I recommend to all sorts of people!
Today, I started to read the first Star Wars book, to prepare for the Star Wars Legends book I checked out. I got past The Phantom Menace but not much further. I do like the story and all, but to be honest, George Lucas should stay with the movies. There's a good story, but the writing isn't as good. It is, however, suitable for younger ages so maybe it's that.
I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Since I won't be here next week, I'm not sure if to keep reading Star Wars (I'm slightly unsatisfied with the writing) or to start reading Dune (I don't have the second book). What do you think?
So, I'll see you feasyheads in one week!
Good morning/afternoon/evening/night/3:00 AM,
Uncle Wally
